We need your input! As many of you are aware, a large, multinational, multidisciplinary investigation of Amazonia is currently being planned. This investigation is the Large-Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia (LBA). This field experiment will study the current functioning of Amazonia and effects of changes in land use and climate on this unique tropical ecosystem. LBA will also address sustainable development of the Amazon region.

Several members from various organizations within Brazil, Europe and the U.S.A. have been given the task of compiling existing datasets from studies conducted in Amazonia. These data are to be made available to the scientific community prior to the start of LBA. These existing data would be useful to the modeling community as well as those investigators considering conducting research during LBA. With your imput, we hope to make this "PRE-LBA" database available on CDROM and the World Wide Web by mid to late 1997 (i.e. before the main phase of the experiment).

Please look over the attached questionnaire and respond at your earliest convenience so that we may further identify relevant datasets. We are looking for existing Amazonian data sets from natural and social sciences for incorporation into the pre-LBA database. If you know of any data that may be of interest for LBA, please fill out the questionaire and mail it back to us. If you have any questions that we can answer, please send an email ( lbadis@cptec.inpe.br ).The Amazon Basin has been a region of intense scientific investigation for many years. Please let us know if you are aware of any existing studies, where those studies occurred and where the resulting data resides (i.e., with the PI, in a datacenter etc).

Also, if you are interested further in being included in an LBA Contacts database to learn more about the LBA experiment, please fill out page 3, with name, affiliation, address, email, phone and fax numbers as well as details on your field of research and particular interest in LBA. If you know of any colleagues that are working in the Amazon region, please inform us about their address and if possible their field of research.
